This is WQRM Regional News for Thursday, April 28, 2005

On the traffic and accident scene over night and yesterday…all was quiet on area streets and highways according to our checks with state police in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

Ridgway troopers tell us they are looking for Michael Alan Hutchins, 16, of Fox Township. He reportedly ran away after an argument with his mother last evening. He’s described as being 5’9", 148 lbs. Last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, white sneakers, and a black jacket. Anyone with information on the whereabouts if Hutchins is asked to contact troopers at 776-6136.

Ridgway PSP was also looking for Angel Winslow, 17, of Kersey. She reportedly ran away yesterday afternoon around 2:40. Winslow was later located in Johnsonburg.

We’re told by Kane based state police Danielle Gullifer, 18, of Kane was involved in a domestic dispute with a known 17 year old male when Gullifer reportedly stabbed the 17 year old, with whom she had a child. The victim was able to leave the residence where the argument occurred. He was transported to Kane Community Hospital before being life-flighted to Hamot Medical Center. He’s listed in stable condition. The accused was charged with attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault before being lodged in the McKean County jail in lieu of $100,000.

Criminal mischief yesterday morning in Genesee Township was investigated by troopers from Coudersport. Joseph Billings, 24, of Wellsville reportedly kicked at a door at the home of Christa Stone during an argument with her.

A known female in Emporium was cited for hindering apprehension, when she knowingly hid a male who was being investigated for a PFA order.

And burglary at the Woodland Elementary School between Saturday and Monday was investigated by troopers from Emporium. Someone entered the school by forcing open a window in the courtyard area. No further details are available.

A stormwater management workshop will be held May 16th at the Courtyard Restaurant here in Smethport. The 6:00pm seminar is open to the public, but aimed toward municipal officials and road maintenance personnel. And Smethport mayor Bernie Carr will proclaim Vietnam Vet’s week for May 1st – 7th this Sunday at 2:00pm at the VFW Post. An open house will also be held at the VFW post on East Water Street in Smethport from 4:00-8:00pm.

Terroristic threats yesterday evening at Otto-Eldred High School is under investigation by troopers from Kane. A known 16 year old reportedly approached a known 14 year old while brandishing a knife. The actor then threatened the victim.

Burglary yesterday in Ridgway is under investigation by troopers from Ridgway. They tell WQRM that between 1:30am and 4:30am 5 camps were broken into on property owned by Robert Weidert. Damage to the camps was limited to the point of entry. Anyone with information is asked to contact troopers at 776-6136.

Coudersport based state police tell us an 11 year old female from Shinglehouse ran away from her home Monday. During initial talks with the girl’s mother, the juvenile returned home.

The investigation into the death of Walter Troy of Roulette continues by Coudersport based state police and potter County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury. Troy died as a result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Theft between Friday and Monday in Galeton remains under investigation by troopers from Coudersport. They tell us the crime occurred after someone removed political campaign posters along Routes 49 and 449 in Ulysses Township for the office Lisa Burton is running.

And Ottis Eastern Services of Wellsville told troopers from Coudersport that some time between December 1st of last year and April 1st of this year someone removed a motor from an oil pumping unit belonging to the company in Hebron Township. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact troopers at 274-8690.

With less than a week’s notice, its been announced the Commissioner Tom Causer has resigned effective the end of this week. Causer gathered with courthouse employees yesterday afternoon and made his announcement. Causer cited the time involved in the post and new opportunities in the private sector as another reason for his decision to step down. The decision for a replacement for Causer is left up the court of common pleas.

Auditing firm Deloitte and Touche LLP has agreed to a payment of $50 million as a result of charges against the firm for the failure to recognize the wrongdoings with Adelphia while the Rigas family was in control. The largest settlement involving an audit firm in the past 10 years, the money recovered will go toward helping to compensate those who lost when Adelphia collapsed.

Over 40 teachers and many community members were present during the Monday evening meeting of the Port Allegany school board. Negotiations have been ongoing for over a year, with students giving a voice during the most recent meeting. Many spoke of the fear of not graduating on time, while still empathizing with those involved.

With the news that parking meters must be calibrated, according to a little-known 1996 law, Bradford has ceased the issuing of parking tickets for the time being. As of Noon yesterday, anyone who has unpaid parking tickets from Bradford can contact the parking enforcement officer at 362-6952.

Bid are being accepted for demolition of part of the Bradford Mall, according to reports. Mentioned in today’s Bradford Era, local contractors received notice, asking for bids for parts of the 30 acre site. Ownership of the mall is questionable, according to reports.

The Port Allegany Artisan’s Club will meet Thursday at 7:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church. A program on wood relief carving and eggshell carving will be presented by Paco Villa. The regular meeting will follow the presentation. Guests and new members are welcome.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…all was quiet on area streets and highways according to our checks with state police in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

David Hastings of Allegany NY told Kane based state police someone stole his 95 Mitsubishi Gallant Sunday. It was later observed parked along Route 646 in Gifford. Anyone with information can contact the Kane barracks at 778-5555.

Yvette Woods of Gifford told Kane based state police someone stole her red 1996 Plymouth mini van on Sunday. Her vehicle was also recovered along Route 646 in Gifford.

Jennifer Depto, 27, of Kane was the operator of a 2004 Toyota involved in an accident as a result of driving under the influence on Sunday. Kane troopers tell WQRM the accident occurred around 1:30am as Depto was traveling south on Wetmore Road in Hamilton Township. She lost control of the car after crossing a set of railroad tracks. The vehicle left the roadway, striking a tree and landing in a ditch. Charges were filed.

We’re told by Kane based state police they’re investigating an incident where 2 known suspects furnished a minor with alcohol this past Saturday. No further details were provided.

Jason Greiss, 24, of Ulysses was involved in an accident according to Coudersport troopers. Coudersport PSP responded to the accident around 4:00am on Saturday. They tell us the accident occurred when Greiss drove his 2003 Nissan Ultima off Route 49 in Mills, striking the guiderails and causing the car to flip on to its roof. Greiss was transported to Charles Cole for treatment of his moderate injuries.

An ongoing investigation by Ridgway based state police left a known 32 year old Elk county resident with less cash in her bank account after someone used her checking account to make several internet based purchases.

Burglary between March 3rd and April 21st is being investigated by Ridgway based state police. A report states Monte Parrish of Weedville told troopers someone entered his home and stole a box filled with assorted coins valued at over $150.00. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact troopers in Ridgway.

And Friday’s Gas and Oil in Byrnedale was the victim of a reported theft March 28th. We’re told a known female suspect paid for gas on a checking account with insufficient funds.

It’s been agreed by bankrupt Adelphia Communications to pay $715 million to settle a federal investigation which began as a result of the fall of the country’s 5th largest cable provider. As part of the agreement, John Regis and his family will hand over more than $1.5 billion in assets.

Kane’s First United Methodist Church will hold a chicken and biscuit dinner this Saturday from 4:00 to 6:30pm a the church. Music will be provided by the Kane Middle School Jazz Band.

On the traffic and accident scene over the past weekend…Ridgway based state police tell WQRM Alexander Geer, 19, of St. Marys was stopped for a traffic violation Saturday just north of Johnsonburg. At the time of the stop, it was also discovered Geer was operating a 1999 Ford Contour under the influence. Charges will be filed.

Danielle Collins, 22, of Emporium was the operator of a 98 Ford Contour SE involved in an accident Saturday evening. Emporium based state police tell us Collins was reportedly traveling too fast while managing a curve along Route 872 in Wharton Township. The car left the roadway and traveled into a ditch, struck an embankment and rotated clockwise. The car then struck the embankment two more times before coming to final rest. An investigation continues.

DUI on Saturday in Norwich Township kept Kane based state police busy. They tell us they stopped Mark Mullins of Smethport for an equipment violation, at which time it was also discovered that Mullins was DUI. Charges will be filed.

A crash Friday along Route 872 was responded to by Coudersport based state police around 1:30pm. They tell WQRM Karl Blank of Philadelphia was traveling south on 872 when his 98 Dodge van hit a deer, causing the van to become inoperable. Blank escaped unharmed.

Emporium based state police tell us someone removed the US flag and Commonwealth flag from a pole located on the Cameron County Courthouse property. Also taken between the 8th and 11th of this month was the hoisting rope. Anyone with information is asked to contact troopers.

Harassment on Saturday in Shippen township was investigated by troopers in Emporium. Michael Hallowell of Cobb Drive in Emporium was reportedly involved in a verbal argument when Dana Grovanz of the same address grabbed Hallowell by the neck. A citation was issued against the accused.

Underage drinking on Saturday was investigated by troopers from Ridgway. They stopped a vehicle in which Kassie Blashaw, 20, of St. Marys was a passenger. She was found by troopers to be drinking alcohol and charges were filed.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…Ridgway based state police tell us Deborah Scolari, 42, of Kersey was traveling south on Dagus Mine Road when a 13 year old on a bicycle entered the roadway from a private driveway and into the path of the Scolari vehicle. Scolari attempted to avoid hitting the bicycle by traveling into the northbound lane while applying her brakes. The bicycle then hit the right front side of Scolari’s Chevrolet Cavalier. The juvenile was not wearing a helmet and received only minor injures.

A fatal rollover yesterday in Hamilton Township, McKean County is still under investigation by Kane based state police. They tell WQRM both Barry McGill, 44, of Kane and 26 year old Joshua Gustafson of Mount Jewett were pronounced deceased at the scene. Another passenger in the garbage truck, Boyd Dowell, 34, of Mount Jewett, which was reportedly, operated by McGill, received serious injuries and was life-flighted to Hamot Medical Center.

And a violation of the firearms act November 5th of last year is under investigation by troopers from Ridgway after a known person attempted to purchase a firearm from Elk County Ammo and Arms in St. Marys.

Chief Operating Officer Ron Cooper arrived yesterday in Coudersport to hand-deliver the news to employees that an agreement had been reached and Adelphia has been sold to Time Warner and Comcast in a joint venture. Coudersport’s workforce, totaling approximately 1,300, received word from Cooper who stated that upon initial visits the current management was surprised at what they found in small-town Coudersport.

And officials at Zippo are breathing a bit easier after learning the ban on lighters on airplanes may be eased. The ban went into effect last Thursday after being signed into law by President Bush. At this time, Greg Booth, Zippo’s President and CEO, says they are working on a way to tell if a lighter is filled or not. Unfilled lighters pose no hazard, so arrangements are being made to tell whether or not a lighter is in fact filled with lighter fluid.

Harassment yesterday morning kept Kane based state police busy. They tell us they responded to the Kane High School for an argument between 2 known juveniles. During the incident one struck the other. Charges will be filed.

Coudersport based state police tell WQRM harassment in Roulette yesterday evening at Rohrer’s Trailer Court was responded to by their barracks. According to the report issued, Michael Milliron, 35, was involved in a verbal confrontation with his wife, Laurie. During the incident, Michael Milliron’s anger escalated before he threw a pack of cigarettes, striking her in the back of the head. The accused was arrested on a summary harassment charge.

Ridgway based state police tell us theft yesterday at the Last Chance Inn in Fox Township is still under investigation by their barracks. According to a report issued, Randal Hugus, 44, of Brandycamp told troopers someone took his Diamondback Response Sport mountain bike from outside the Inn. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Ridgway based state police.

A collision Tuesday along Route 6 in Hamlin Township was responded to by Kane based state police. Their report states that Kyle Wilson, 18, of Mt. Jewett was traveling east in a 76 Chevrolet Truck when he lost control of the unit before it struck a utility pole, overturned several times and came to rest in a field. Wilson was taken to Kane Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Charges are pending.

Kane based state police took Lindy Trimm, 50, of Port Allegany into custody after an incident on Tuesday in Liberty Township. A report states that Trimm, who was highly intoxicated, threatened to shoot himself. Tammy Warnick, also 50 and a Port Allegany resident stated to troopers that she was terrified, as she was with two young children at the time of this incident. Trimm attempted to flee in a vehicle before being apprehended to troopers. The accused was taken into custody, transported to Bradford Regional for a BAC test and arraigned before being lodged in the county jail.

A crash Monday along Kidney Road, at the Route 49 intersection was responded to by Coudersport PSP, who tell WQRM Edward Shea, 25, of Wellsville was traveling at a high rate of speed, while approaching unit 2, a 98 Peterbilt driven by George Lee of Genesee. As Lee began to turn onto Kidney Road, Shea attempted to pass on the left, only to struck the truck driven by Lee. Shea was charged with failure to drive at a safe speed and limitations on driving on the left side of the roadway.

Theft between April 1st and Monday of this week is under investigation by troopers from Coudersport. They tell us someone took a combined 180 prescription pills from the residence of Eric and Victoria Johnson of Genesee. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact troopers in Coudersport at 274-8690.

 

This is WQRM Regional News for Wednesday, April 20, 2005

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…Coudersport based state police tell us Melissa Kio, 25, of Ulysses was operating a 2003 Mustang in a westerly direction on Route 49, ½ mile east of the Eulalia Township line when she lost control of the car, driving it off the north side of the roadway, along an embankment for about 255 feet before it struck a concrete culvert and came to rest. The investigation continues and Kio was not injured.

Criminal mischief in Fox Township last evening is being investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. They tell WQRM William Decker, 36, of Kersey reported that someone smashed the rear window to his 2004 Honda Element. Anyone with information about this incident can contact troopers.

Kevin Boleen, 35, of Brockport told Ridgway based state police that some time yesterday unknown persons took his Kawasaki KX 65 dirt bike from his front yard, departing in an unknown direction. Those with information are asked to contact troopers in Ridgway.

Retail theft at the Wal-Mart in Fox Township, Elk County last evening left 20 year old Caleb Graham of Emporium charged with retail theft after he lifted a pack of Gillette Razor Blades from the store. The incident was investigated by troopers from the Ridgway state police barracks.

Criminal mischief on Monday in Emporium was investigated by state police there. They tell WQRM someone smeared peanut butter on the driver’s side window of a vehicle owned by Paul Richards. No further details are available.

Burglary between March 20th and yesterday is being investigated by troopers from Coudersport. They tell us actors illegally entered a seasonal residence owned by Robert Himborn of Moscow, PA. Entry was made by breaking a window. Removed were 2 bottles of liquor. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coudersport based state police barracks.

Emporium based state police have charged 19 year old Thomas Richards of Emporium and 21 year old North Bend resident Benjamin Ott after an incident on the 17th where the two were involved in a dispute where Richards broke out the passenger side rear window of Ott’s pickup and Ott kicked out the front headlight of the Richards vehicle, in addition to striking Richards in the head. Richards has been charged with criminal mischief, while Ott was charged with criminal mischief and harassment.

Criminal mischief on Saturday of last week remains under investigation by troopers from the Ridgway state police barracks. They tell WQRM someone scratched a vehicle owned by Marsha Marche of Kersey, while Marche was in the Dagus mines American Legion. Those invovled also cut a hole in her truck’s tonneau cover. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact troopers or Elk County Crimstoppers.

Emporium based state police responded to a one vehicle accident along Route 120 , 3 miles east of Emporium borough on Friday. Paul Hartley of Middleburg was operating a 96 Dodge truck when he lsot control, impacting a utility pole. Hartley was not wearing a seatbelt, receiving only minor injuries.

The scattering of rubbish along Germania Street Extension in Galeton by Leo Stevens of Galeton let the accused charged with the same after he dumped 9 boxes of trash on property owned by Mark Germino of Galeton.

And Emporium based state police tell WQRM Jeffery Johnson of Emporium was the victim of a reported act of criminal mischief some time between the 8th and 9th of this month. During the incident, someone tampered with the victim’s mailbox by bending the lid. Those with information are asked to contact troopers.

The McKean County Chapter of Pa Cleanways will meet Saturday at 8:00am to clean up property along Rigel Road in Kane. Those interested in helping are asked to contact either Jim Clark at 887-5613 or Heather McKean at 778-5208 to register.

The next meeting of the Smethport Chamber of Commerce will be held today at 8:00am at Lakeview Senior Care and Living Center. A continental breakfast will be served.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…an accident along Route 449 in Ulysses Township, Potter County was responded to by Coudersport based state police. They tell WQRM a 1994 Ford Tempo driven by a 17 year old from Coudersport. The operator was traveling north of 449 when the car abruptly swerved due to deflation of the front driver’s side tire. Swerving off the roadway, the car hit a tree. The driver and 2 other juveniles were taken to Charles Cole for treatment.

A hit and run last evening was investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. They tell WQRM someone driving an early to mid-90’s model Chevrolet truck was traveling along Route 949. A Diamond Back bicycle owned by Wes Garbic was on the berm when the driver of the truck drove by and the mirror on the truck hit the shoulder of Garbic. The unknown truck then fled toward Ridgway. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Ridgway PSPS at 776-6136 or Elk County Crimestoppers at (800) 775-2030.

Ridgway based state police tell us they found an off-road dirt bike in Horton Township, Elk County. To claim, contact the barracks at 776-6136.

Ridgway based state police tell us the body of Todd Boardman, 41, of Smethport was found Sunday around 5:30pm in a wooded area near East Branch Lake in Jones Township, Elk County. Boardman was reported missing by Kane PSP on April 4th after he reportedly walked from an accident scene. There is no indication of foul play at this time, according to troopers.

Coudersport based state police tell us a crash occurred Saturday along Route 44, at the Abbott Road intersection. A known 16 year old from Brockport was traveling south on a 1999 Suzuki. Approaching the intersection with Junction Road, the operator lost control on loose gravel, sending the bike sliding. The operator was taken to Charles Cole for treatment of minor injuries to both hands.

And the IU9 approved Coudersport School District’s take-over of several IU9 run programs, including enrichment. The take-over is effective July 1st.

On the traffic and accident scene over the past weekend…Ridgway based state police tell us they responded to a DUI related incident along Ogrin Road in Highland Township on Saturday. Ronald Zarnick, 41, of Butler was operating a 96 Suzuki RM125 when he lost control of the bike as a result of driving under the influence. As a result of Zarnick losing control of the bike, he sustained several injuries which resulted in the operator being life-flighted to Altoona Hospital. Zarnick has been charged with DUI and 6 summary traffic violations.

A hit and run between the 16th and the 17th in Fox Township is being investigated by troopers in Ridgway, who tell WQRM someone driving a blue or teal Chrysler passenger car struck a mailbox owned by Garry Saline of Kersey. During the incident, the passenger side mirror was knocked off. Anyone with information can contact the Ridgway barracks.

And Ridgway trooper tell us they are investigating an incident of a Protection from Abuse order violation which occurred yesterday morning in Kersey. Reportedly, someone who was evicted from a residence stopped by the residence of Shirley VanDyne…fleeing before troopers arrived.

Underage drinking on Saturday by Jason Brosky and Richard Tokarcik, both 19 and Brockway residents, was investigated by troopers from Ridgway. They tell us they stopped the 2 for traffic violations while operating ATVs along Route 219 in Horton Township.

Kane troopers tell WQRM Sarah Howard of Bradford was the victim of a reported act of criminal mischief on Saturday. According to the report issued, Tina Howard, of Duke Center, was arguing with the victim when she tore the rubber seal from around the passenger’s side door and punched the window of a 91 Plymouth Lazer owned by the victim. The accused was charged with criminal mischief.

An accidental fire on Friday was investigated by Kane PSP, who tell WQRM Anthony Lombardo, 74, of Erie passed away during the fire which began when Lombard attempted to start a propane stove. A flash fire resulted when the decedent attempted to light the stove.

And Kane troopers are asking anyone who may have found a cell phone described as being an LG VX3200PP model to turn the phone into their barracks. Robert Kelley of Smethport reported the item missing after it was re-activated under a new name and number.

The annual celebration of the arts in Kane will take place this Thursday. Another celebration will be held next Thursday in Mount Jewett. Both events begin at 6:00pm. The Kane events are being held at the Chestnut Street Elementary School, while the Mount Jewett events will take place at their Elementary School.

And the Community Blood Bank of Western NY will hold a blood drive today from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the YMCA in Olean.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…all was quiet according to our checks with state police in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

Ridgway based state police tell us criminal mischief on the 14th kept their barracks busy. According to the report issued, someone damaged a quarterpanel on a Ford truck owned by Richard Wildfire of Kersey while it was parked at either The Summit, The Last Chance or Rumors. Anyone with information about this incident should contact Ridgway based PSP.

A collision on Tuesday was investigated by Coudersport based state police. They tell WQRM Randall Pierce, 19, of Troupsburg, NY was traveling west on Route 6 when he veered off the right side. Trying to steer back on to the roadway, his 97 Chevrolet Cavalier started fishtailing. Pierce lost control, struck a ditch and hit an embankment before the car flipped, coming to rest on its roof. Pierce was ejected from the car, while a passenger, Travis Vanocker, 21, of Ulysses was also ejected. Vanocker was life-flighted to Robert Packer. Another passenger, Teal Vanocker, 18, also from Ulysses was not injured.

Stacy Claycombs of Duke Center told Kane based state police someone arrived at a location along Sweitzer Drive, just north of Route 246 some time between Saturday and Sunday. Once on the scene those involved pulled a dish from a post, throwing it to the ground. Those involved then fled by way of a closed ATV in the area. The investigation continues and anyone with information can contact troopers.

Kane based state police tell us between January 1st and February 15th of this year someone stole various items from a vehicle owned by Ronald Reynolds of Port Allegany. Items taken include a car stereo/CD player, sparkomatic base cannon speakers, (4) American racing wheels and a trunk lid for a Chevrolet Berretta. Anyone with information about these missing items is asked to contact troopers in Kane.

Smethport School District board members met Wednesday in a forum to discuss the joining of the district into Act 72. The act regards tax relief. The board agreed to wait until their May 9th meeting to make a decision.

And a St. Bonavenure student accused of plagiarism withdrew the initial admittance to the fact the they had done so. After learning that there was a way out of the serious situation from an assistant athletic director, the student withdrew from the affected class prior to April 1st.

 

This is WQRM Regional News for Thursday, April 14, 2005

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…an accident yesterday afternoon at the Route 144/Route 44 intersection left Georgia Osbourne with minor injuries. According to Coudersport troopers, Osbourne lost control of a 2005 Harley Davidson Sportster. The bike traveled onto the east berm before coming to rest in a ditch. Osbourne was transported by private vehicle to Charles Cole for treatment.

A hit and run on Sunday in Halton, Spring Creek township, Elk County was investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. According to their report, Michael Serafini, 22, of Brockway was traveling west along River Road when he exited the south shoulder and struck a tree and utility pole. He then fled on another ATV. Charges were filed.

A 2 vehicle crash along Route 46 was responded to by Kane based state police on Saturday. Lynette Gerner, 30, of Lewis Run was traveling north on Route 646. As she took a right curve, the 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 250 being operated crossed the center line before entering oncoming traffic, where it collided with a 2004 Mercury Sedan operated by 75 year old Mildred Burdick of Smethport. The Gerner vehicle then skidded on its side for about 45 feet before coming to rest. Gerner received only minor injuries as a result of the accident.

Kane PSP tell WQRM April 8th a known juvenile and a known adult removed a green Ford Escort from the lot of Todd Motor Sales in Eldred. The vehicle was later returned to same and the investigation continues.

Leslie Cooper, 57, of Bradford told Kane troopers that some time between March 1st of 2002 and November 1 of last year someone removed a Sears 18HP red/grey riding mower from his property along Route 46, between Farmers Valley and Rew. The original lawn mower was replaced with a similar model. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident should contact Kane based state police.

Between October 16, 2004 and April 11th of this year a known female scattered rubbish near the intersection with Lillibridge Creek Road Extension and Sartwell Road in Liberty Township. Kane based state police tell WQRM the investigation continues.

Sentencing for Timothy and John Rigas has been pushed back to June, according to an AP report.  Lawyers involved in the case asked Judge Leonard Sand for more time.  Sentencing was originally scheduled for this coming Monday in New York.  Both men could spend in excess of 30 years in prison in connection with the looting of Adelphia.  Re-trial requests for both men were turned down by Judge Sand.

McKean County commissioners have agreed to establish a law making it illegal to burn opening within the county.

A representative of the Governor’s Veteran’s Outreach Center will be available to speak with area veterans on April 20th, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Bradford Careerlink on Davis Street. Those stopping by are asked to bring with them their DD-214.Homebound veterans can also make arrangements for visits by phoning (800) 352-0915.

Senator Joe Scarnati or one of his representatives will hold constituent hours Friday in the following locations. At the Bradford Chamber office from 10:00am to 11:00am. He will also be available in Kane, at their borough office from 12L30pm to 1:30pm.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…all was quiet on area streets and highways according to our checks with troopers in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

Coudersport based state police tell us they are investigating a theft which occurred between Monday and Tuesday of this week. According to their report, someone removed the top rear passenger’s side panel from a Geo Tracker owned by Raymond Kulp of Roulette. Anyone with information is asked to contact troopers.

And Ridgway troopers tell WQRM Douglas Frantz, 26, of Ridgway was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia on Tuesday. Charges were filed.

Otto-Eldred School District Class of ’93 graduate Matt Splain has come home again. Splain was hired by the district as their next High School principal. He replaces Rick Moore who accepted a position with the Salamanca School District.

Ridgway School District okayed the upcoming school year’s budget, with no tax increase necessary. Actual adoption of the budget may occur during the June meeting.

And, according to Gary Kraus, Governor Ed Rendell will be the guest speaker at the Elk County Democratic dinner April 22nd. The dinner is set to begin at 6:00pm at the St. Marys Country Club.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…all was reportedly quiet on area streets and highways according to our checks with state police in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

A DUI related ATV crash occurred Sunday evening in Byrnedale, Jay Township, Elk County. According to Ridgway based state police, Abraham Gornati, 21, of Byrnedale was driving along Washington Avenue when he lost controlof his ATV while rounding a curve. The ATV spun and then stopped, throwing Gornati from the ATV. He was wearing a helmet, receiving only moderate injuries. Troopers found the operator to be DUI. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Emporium troopers tell WQRM Tracy Weis, 35, of Emporium told them that someone broke the driver’s side mirror loose from its mounting on her Plymouth Sedan some time between the 8th and the 9th.

A hit and run between the 8th and the 9th in Kersey is being investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. They tell us the collision occurred as an unknown vehicle struck a building behind the Corner Market in Kersey. The vehicle then fled undetected. Anyone with information can contact troopers at 776-6136.

A burglary between March 9th and April 9th at the Tom Mix Birthplace Museum in Gibson Township, Cameron County was investigated by troopers from Emporium. No details are available as to what may be missing.

And criminal mischief between April 6th and the 10th in Shippen township was investigated by troopers from the Emporium based state police barracks. They tell us Steven Gentzyel’s 2003 Chevrolet SUV was scratched in several places. No further details are available.

Bradford is set to lose the Salvation Army’s Thrift Store on Main Street as a lack of business and competition are taking their toll on the store, which has occupied the Main Street location for nearly a year. No official date has been set for the last day of business at the thrift store.

The 2005-2006 Otto-Eldred School District Enrichment budget was passed during the Monday board meeting. Resignation of Christine Splain from the board was accepted. Her replacement must be a resident of Eldred. Those interested in the position are asked to contact Steve Hepfer before April 30th. And early dismissal for students on June 3rd was okayed.

Those interested in speaking at the meeting with Representative Martin Causer and the PA Game Commission on April 19th at 6:00pm are asked to sign up by phoning Causer’s office in Bradford. Only those interested in speaking need to call Causer’s office at 866-437-8181. The deadline for registering is April 18th.

Spraying of the Main Street pear trees in Bradford is set for 8:00am tomorrow, weather permitting. Those in the area looking for a space to park may want to find an alternate place to park during the spraying as signs will be posted until the spraying is complete.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…Coudersport based state police responded to 2 accidents on Sunday. According to their first report, John Nederfield, 83, of Westfield was traveling north in an 86 Oldsmobile station wagon along North Fork road, when, for unknown reasons the vehicle traveled onto the east side of the roadway, through a field and into a snow fence. The vehicle then went airborne over a small embankment, where it crossed Miller Road. The car continued over another embankment and into a small stream, where it came to rest. Nederfield was treated on the scene for his injuries before being taken by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital.

According to the second report, they responded to an accident along Route 44 around 5:30. Their report says Jody Ann Bennett, 44, of Coudersport was traveling north on a 2000 Harley Davidson, when she lost control, drove off the east side and hit a guiderail, causing the bike to tip over. Bennett was taken to Charles Cole for treatment. An investigation continues.

Burglary between Saturday and Sunday is being investigated by troopers at the Ridgway barracks. According to a report issued, someone reportedly removed a Hewlett Packard computer from the residence of Douglas Frantz of Ridgway. Damaged was also caused by those involved while inside the residence.

A one vehicle accident on Saturday sent Ridgway troopers to Route 948, south of Oknefski road in Ridgway Township. The barracks tells WQRM Morgan Casher, 17, of Woodland was traveling south on 948 when he fell asleep, losing control of the 89 Chevrolet Z-24 Coupe he was operating. The car left Route 948 along the west berm, striking a utility pole. The car then re-entered the roadway, crossed both lanes of traffic and came to rest along the east side of Route 948. Casher was taken to elk Regional for treatment of his minor injuries.

Gabrielle Glatt, 29, of Kersey was allegedly the victim of an act of criminal mischief some time between Friday and Saturday. According to Ridgway based state police who are investigating, someone damaged several limbs of a lilac bush before leaving the scene. Criminal mischief between the 8th and 9th in Shippen township is being investigated by troopers from the Emporium based state police barracks. They tell us someone removed a mailbox owned by Annie Sepiol of Emporium. Once removed, the mailbox and its pole was placed across the road in a neighbor’s yard. Those involved in this incident also bent 2 reflective markers. Anyone with information can contact troopers at 486-3321.

Terroristic threats on Friday against Regina Singleton was investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. A report was received of a verbal argument between Singleton and Brian Keith of Brockway. Sharon Keith, also of Brockway was charged in connection with this incident with Terroristic Threats, Criminal conspiracy to commit Terroristic Threats and Recklessly Endangering. Brian Keith was charged with Terroristic Threats and Criminal Conspiracy to commit Terrorstic Threats. Both accused individuals were taken to the Elk County jail after being arraigned, in lieu of a $5,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing.

Theft by unlawful taking between March 1st and April 6th is under investigation by troopers from the Coudersport based state police barracks. They tell WQRM the incident occurred as someone removed a 14 foot canoe from a shed owned by Christine Mountz of Genesee. Anyone with information can contact troopers in Coudersport.

Criminal mischief between March 20th and March 25th is still under investigation by troopers from Coudersport. They tell us someone damaged an 87 Chrysler New Yorker owned by Timothy Wilson of Shinglehouse. A large rock was reportedly thrown at the roof and windshield. During this incident, the side windows were also damaged. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact troopers in Coudersport at 274-8690.

An accident Wednesday was responded to by troopers from Coudersport based state police. According to their report, Molly Fry, 22, of Genesee was traveling south on Route 44 when the driver’s side mirror of the Fry vehicle struck the driver’s side mirror of a 97 Dodge Ram operated by Roy Nickerson Jr. also of Genesee. Glass from the mirror penetrated Nickerson’s arm, sending him to Charles Cole for treatment. Anyone witnessing this incident is asked to contact Coudersport based state police at (814) 274-8690.

Otto-Eldred High School will hold college programs for students April 19th, beginning at 12:45pm. "Making Your College Search Count" will be held for sophomores and juniors. "Making College and Career Count" will be held for seniors. Both presentations are free and open to students and parents.

And registration at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Preschool in Mount Jewett will be held Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00pm.Children must be 3 or 4 on or before August 31, 2005 if they live in the Kane School District. Or by September 1st if they love in the Smethport School District.

On the traffic and accident scene over night and yesterday…all was reported quiet on area streets and highways according to our checks with state police in the WQRM listening area. There were no related incidences to report either.

A 2 vehicle accident along Route 219 in Johnsonburg Borough was responded to by troopers from the Ridgway barracks Wednesday morning. According to their report, Michael Marconi, 27, of Ridgway was operating a 94 Ford Tempo. Stopped in the northbound lane of Route 219, Marconi was waiting to make a left turn into a driveway when Carla Walker tried to bring her car to a stop, realizing Marconi was stopped on Route 219. Failing to stop her vehicle in time, the Walker vehicle struck the rear of the Marconi vehicle. Walker was cited for failure to operate a vehicle at a safe speed. Neither of the operators were injured. A passenger in the Marconi vehicle, 32 year old Steve Stuedler of Ridgway also was uninjured.

Ridgway based state police tell us their barracks investigated an act of criminal mischief, which occurred Tuesday at Curly’s Bait Shop in Wilcox. According to a report issued, someone caused damage to a Pepsi machine by melting the plastic on the machine with a lighter. Those involved also pulled on the phone line entering Curly’s Bait Shop. Anyone with information is asked to contact troopers.

And Kane based state police are asking for your help in locating 41 year old Todd Boardman of Smethport. Boardman was reportedly involved in an accident on Sunday along Route 146 in Clermont. After the incident, in which Boardman was a passenger, Boardman left the scene. He is not a suspect, according to troopers. He has not been seen since the incident. Anyone with information about Todd Boardman’s whereabouts is asked to contact Trooper Stuckey at the Kane barracks at 778-5555.

And PennDOT tells us that improvements to Route 44 in Potter County are now underway. Among the improvements being made are those to drainage and paving in the Shinglehouse area. Motorists traveling in the Shinglehouse area, in addition to Sweden Valley and Ulyses are asked to use caution as work will be done in those areas. Work should be finished by August 6th.

According to a late release yesterday by the Associated Press, agreement has been reached in the sale of Adelphia to Time Warner and Comcast for a price of nearly $18 million. Adelphia officials declined comment on the sale of the company.

And St. Bonaventure University will host a reception for the late Senator Patricia McGee today from 1:30 to 3:30 in Doyle Hall.

Emporium based state police tell WQRM they arrested 58 year old Joseph Russo of Sinnemahoning for possession of 2 rifles while he was in Grove Township, Cameron County on March 30th. Russo was arrested for indirect criminal contempt for violating 2 protection from abuse orders.

Troopers from Emporium also tell us Russo became involved in a verbal argument with Candice Yenets of Sinnemahoning on March 30th. The incident turned into a physical altercation. Russo was cited for harassment.

And Ridgway based state police tell WQRM the investigation into the murder of Irene Challingsworth 6 years ago continues. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident can contact PA Crimestoppers at (800) 4PA TIPS. That’s (800) 472-8477.

12 ½ years in the state prison was the sentence handed down to Clinton James Watson, in connection with the death of Serena Powell in January of last year.

Nothing was found during a search in Liberty and Eldred Townships. Reports of downed aircraft in the area turned up nothing by those searching on ATVs.

And a cash bid of $16.5 billion has been put on the table by Cablevision for Adelphia’s assets. According to a report is today’s Bradford Era, no comment was given by either side regarding the offer.

Representative Martin Causer or one of his representatives will hold constituent hours today in Emporium from 9:00 to 10:00am at the borough office. He’ll also be in Port Allegany from 10:30 to 11:30 and in Eldred from 12:30 to 1:30.

On the traffic and accident scene Kane based state police stopped 23 year old Alan Chapman of Smethport early yesterday morning along Roue 446 in Keating Township. Chapman was initially stopped for a traffic violation at which time troopers also discovered he was driving under the influence. Charges are pending.

Ridgway troopers investigated an act of harassment after an incident between Sunday and Monday of this week at GKN Sintered Metals in Fox Township. According to the report issued, Kevin Herzing, 37, of Johnsonburg called Josie Wolfe, 25, of Kersey, leaving 2 harassing phone messages. The accused the proceeded to contact the victim at work. Charges were filed.

An accidental fire on Sunday was investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. They tell us the fire occurred as a result of an electrical malfunction at the home of Joseph and Michele Harvey.

Coudersport based state police tell us charges are pending against a known male for forging a prescription for drugs at the Galeton Drug pharmacy.

And James Umbaugh III, 24, of Shinglehouse has been charged with corruption of minors after separate incidences in August and December of last year.

A toll could be in the future of those traveling along Winslow Hill in Benezette Township, Elk County. During their regular meeting yesterday, Township Supervisor Jerry Willaman said it would bring in much needed income.

And Coudersport Ambulance Association will have an open house from 1:00 to 5:00pm Saturday. Tours will be given and refreshments will be served.

The Allegheny National Forest will host a documentary celebrating 100 years of service April 18th at the Warren Public Library in the Slater Room, beginning at 6:00pm. Another documentary will be held April 19th at the Ridgway High School beginning at 6:00pm and April 20th, beginning at 6:00pm at UPB’s Rice Auditorium. The public is invited to this free viewing. Representative Martin Causer and Senator Joe Scarnati will present a state grant to the McKean-Potter Chapter of the American Red Cross tomorrow at 5:00pm. The presentation will take place at the chapter’s Congress Street location in Bradford.

On the traffic and accident scene overnight and yesterday…a one vehicle accident occurred yesterday morning around 7:26. Troopers from Ridgway tell WQRM Dennis Bauer, 49, of St. Marys was traveling north on Route 219 when he lost control of the 98 Ford Explorer Sport he was operating on the icy roadway. The vehicle left the roadway and struck some small trees before traveling across a private driveway and hitting an embankment. The vehicle then rolled on to the driver’s side. Bauer was taken to Elk Regional for treatment and cited for failure to drive at a save speed.

Kane based state police are investigating the missing of Todd Boardman, 42, of Smethport. Boardman was a passenger involved in an accident Sunday between 2:30 and 6:00am. Boardman reportedly left in an unknown direction and not been seen since. Anyone with information about Boardman’s whereabouts is asked to contact Kane based state police.

Disorderly conduct yesterday in Mount Jewett was investigated by Kane based state police who tell WQRM Shane Steck, 19, of Mt. Jewett was cited for running naked through Mt. Jewett.

Coudersport based state police have cited Wade Tubbs, 49, of Harrison Valley with disorderly conduct after he struck Thomas Robinson of Ulysses in the face with a closed fist on Sunday.

Harassment by a known 17 year old female from Coudersport was investigated by troopers there. According to the report issued, the suspect threw a heated microwave oven at Lori Kocjancic, also a Coudersport resident.

We’re told by Ridgway based state police that a theft occurred April 1st at Elk County Medical Associates in Kersey. Dr. David Caruso told troopers someone removed a hand held computer from the office between 1:30 and 4:00pm. Anyone with information can contact troopers.

PSPS in Coudersport tell WQRM a burglary occurred between March 30th and April 1st on Lyman road in Roulette Township. Paul Forry told troopers someone entered his garage and removed (60) 16 foot 2x4 and (25) 8 foot 2x4s. Anyone with information pertaining to this theft can contact Coudersport troopers at 274-8690.

Kyle Babcock has been cited by District Justice Barbara Boser for furnishing alcohol to 3 minors back in February. The investigation continues.

And Following an investigation by the North Central Drug Task Force over the past month, a Wilcox man was arrested on charges of delivery and possession of marijuana. 33 year old Naushad Punjani was taken into custody Monday afternoon and arraigned before Alvin Brown, District Justice. Punjani was then lodged in the Elk County Prison in lieu of bail.

On the traffic and accident scene over the past weekend…an accident along the Genesee/Mills Road was responded to by troopers from the Coudersport state police barracks yesterday morning at 1:30am. A report issued states that Peter Zehr, 20, of Harrison Valley veered off the right side of the roadway, traveled about 130 feet and struck a utility pole. No further details are available. Major injuries were received, although its not known who received the injuries, the driver or his passenger, 22 year old Rodney Connolly of Ulysses.

And John Patalano, 28, of Lancaster was southbound in a 97 Chevrolet Lumina on Route 948, north of Kersey on Sunday. Troopers from Ridgway tell us the operator was traversing a hill on the snow covered roadway when he lost control, sending the vehicle across the northbound lane and into a utility pole. Patalano was cited for not driving at a safe speed.

A 2 vehicle crash along Route 219 in Jones Township on Sunday was responded to by Ridgway based state police who tell WQRM 18 year old Michael Wolfel, of Wilcox, was traveling north on 219 in a 99 Chevrolet Cavalier. Wolfel lost control of the car on the snow and slush covered roadway, sending the car sliding off the east berm, back across the northbound lane and into the southbound lane where it struck a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by James Poklar of Emporium. Heather Halquist, a passenger in the Poklar vehicle was taken to Elk Regional for treatment of moderate injuries to her leg. Wolfel was treated for an injury to his hand. Wolfel was also cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.

A one vehicle accident Sunday along Route 948 in Fox Township was responded to by Ridgway troopers, who tell us Gary Smith, 38, of Kersey was traveling south when his 89 ford ranger began to spin clockwise. The truck left the roadway, entered a ditch and impacted an embankment. The truck then rolled onto its roof, coming to rest in the ditch. Smith was wearing a seatbelt and received no injuries.

A collision on Sunday, 1/2 mile west of St. Marys, was responded to by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. Their report states that Joshua Wickett, 30, of Ridgway was traveling west, while Jessica Terwilliger, 19, of Ridgway was eastbound in a ford Contour. Wickett lost control of his car, before it impacted the Terwilliger vehicle. Charges for not driving at a safe speed were handed over to Wickett.

34 year old Kimberly Malaczewski of Galeton was cited by Coudersport based state police for public drunkeness on Saturday. She was seen by troopers jumping from a moving vehicle in Abbott township, Potter County.

An investigation into a hit and run between Friday and Saturday is still under investigation by Ridgway based state police. A report from their barracks states that someone hit a utility pole along Grant Road in Ridgway Township. The vehicle driven is believed to be a GM model vehicle, possibly black in color. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident can contact troopers in Ridgway.

Emporium based state police tell us they are continuing their investigation into a theft from a motor vehicle between the 1st and 2nd of this month in the borough. Their report states that someone removed a truck owned by Robert Hoffower. The vehicle was later recovered.

A one vehicle accident along Steis Drive in Ridgway Township was responded to by state police there. They tell WQRM John Bogacki, 19, of Ridgway was travelling north on a Yamaha 450 YFZ ATV when he lost control. Bogacki was thrown from the vehicle before it rolled over the operator, causing moderate injuries.

And a fire of undetermined origin yesterday afternoon is being investigated by troopers from the Ridgway barracks. A report issued states that an A frame owned by Joseph and Michele Harvey was a total loss at an estimate of $250,000. Anyone who may have information pertaining to this fire can contact the Clearfield based state police at 857-3800 or the Criminal Investigation Unit in Ridgway at 776-6136.

A theft between Wednesday and yesterday in Wilcox is being investigated by troopers at the Ridgway barracks. They tell us someone arrived at two businesses owned by Alvin Sallack of Johnsonburg and used a key to access two Pepsi Cola machines. Those involved took about $50.00 in cash before fleeing undetected. Anyone with information can contact the Ridgway barracks.

And Coudersport based state police tell us harassment on Wednesday was investigated by their troopers. According to the report given, Nathan Bennett, 25, of Gaines was charged with harassment after threatening to physically harm Justin Gorg, 20, of Coudersport.

Bradford resident Michele Whittemore was charged in connection with leaving her 3 sons home alone while she reportedly picked up a friend. Whittemore has been arraigned on 3 charges of endangering the welfare of her sons. Whittemore was released on $1,000 unsecured bail, with a preliminary hearing set for April 20th at 1:00pm before District Justice Barbara Boser.

The Allegheny National Forest has announced that snowmobile trails are officially closed. Beginning Friday, May 27th, ATV trails will re-open for the summer. They close on September 25th. For more information, visit the ANF link on our website at wqrm.net.

A benefit concert by Gene Shunk and Friends will be held April 16th at 7:00pm at the East Smethport United Christian Church, beginning at 7:00pm.
