History of Man To Man - Locally & Nationally
The MTM program was started by an individual in Florida who felt the need to share the after effects of prostate treatment. This evolved into Man to Man Inc., a Florida-based corporation in 1994. The American Cancer Society formally adopted the program in 1996 and promotes Man to Man nationally.
Locally, Man To Man was started In March 2005 by Marty Weiss, meeting one-on-one with men. It then evolved into monthly meetings with 6 men attending the first meeting held by Weiss in Coudersport. Invited are a urologist, oncologist and speakers on healthy choices and the use of vitamins.
**MTM is not a program advising men on medical decisions**
That is between patient and doctor.
MTM is an opportunity for doctor's to refer patients with prostate cancer, (or for that matter, any cancer) to their office of the American Cancer Society. We can be effective and helpful in support.
Man to Man stands as the American Cancer Society's primary response to the needs of men regarding prostate cancer. This includes public awareness about prostate cancer, services, and information when someone is faced with the possibility of a diagnosis of prostate cancer and continues as long as prostate cancer is a personal concern. For the man with prostate cancer and his family, the Society can offer resources and services at the time of diagnosis; during decision making about treatment; coping with treatment and its side effects; returning to a full, active life; or confronting any long-term effects, including a recurrence of the disease.
As the American Cancer Society's signature program for prostate cancer, MTM provides an opportunity for the Society to assume leadership for prostate cancer. An interdisciplinary approach at the Division and regional/community level will allow the Society to become the organization people turn to for information and services for prostate cancer. MTM can play a key role in the Society becoming:
The national leader in prostate cancer patient, survivor, and family education and support.
A trusted source for unbiased prostate cancer information for the public and for health care professionals.
A national prostate cancer leader in all of the above areas for high risk groups, such as African Americans and other ethnic minorities.
In turn, the MTM program can build a group of volunteers who can carry out and support the Society's services at the regional/community level. In addition to providing information and support to men and their families, MTM volunteers and group participants provide a corps of manpower who can become involved in advocacy, communications, and income development activities related to prostate cancer. MTM also provides a focus for working collaboratively with community groups and health care professionals to achieve the 2015 goals for prostate cancer.
